First non-banking Islamic banking institution to launch service

Tabung Haji (TH) Corporation emerge as the first non-banking Islamic institution in the world to introduce debit card through the launch of Tabung Haji Debit -i MasterCard.

With this card, 8.4 million TH depositor now have an easy and safe access to their account wherever they are.

Functions as cash

This card functions as cash or personal cheque with every purchase and transactions will be paid directly from the depositor's saving account.

Depositor can make withdrawal from 2.5 million automated teller machine (ATM) around the world other than shopping conveniences at 38 million trader location that accepts MasterCard in Saudi Arabia and worldwide.

TH Chief Executive Officer and Group Managing Director, Datuk Ismee Ismail said with this card haj pilgrims can make easy and safe withdrawal and purchase transactions in Holy Land (Tanah Suci).

He said TH didn't make it compulsory for all depositors to own this card and it's up to the depositor to apply for the card.

"We didn't expect all the depositors to apply this debit card because it depends on the depositor's willingness. For a start, we aim between 5,000 to 10,000 depositor will apply for debit card in two months and that's good enough for us," he said after the card launching function by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in Kuala Lumpur.

Also attended are Minister in Prime Minister Department, Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom and TH Chairman, Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim.

Application for the Tabung Haji Debit-i MasterCard can be made beginning June 9 at all TH counter in Malaysia.

 Impressed with TH achievements

Earlier, Najib said, he is impressed with TH development that has more than eight million depositors with a total savings of more than 48 billion.

He describes TH achievements as positive because it's a difficult task for an institution that can only involve in business and investment according to Islamic law.

TH involvement in various economic sector has generated good income and able to share it among depositors through yearly competitive bonusses and zakat payment, he said.
