MINISTERS WIVES SHOULDN’T SYMBOLIZE AS MODEL OR QUEEN OF FASHION

CORRUPTIONS AMONG CIVIL SERVANT IS WIDER BIGGER THAN POLITICIANS

Umno leaders especially at higher level must make radical and drastic reformation in approaching people, including in image appearance although it would look awkward and unnatural at first.

The way Prime Minister and ministers approaching people through formal visit or formal functions with people being brought by buses from different parts of country won’t leave long term effect to ensure their support.

What needs to be done are to increase surprise visits, visits accompanied by only one or two bodyguards and relevant officers who didn’t appear formal in their image appearance including in their dressing.

From my experience as Member of Parliment in Merbok, this approach is more effective in obtaining real information from grassroots and not from people within UMNO or government servants who wish to conceal real situation or their weaknesses.

People will feel the friendlier UMNO when an UMNO leader at branch levels championing their daily issues in dealing with government.

The most popular issue is lack of proper management at residential area such as clogged drain, unattended rubbish, uncut cogon grass and delay in processing application and their complain about government offices.
Reporters manage to highlight these poverty problems first. This is not done by leaders or Jabatan Kebajian Masyarakat.

UMNO shouldn’t allow problems such as carelessness, laziness, negligence, corruption and irresponsible attitude by civil servants championed by the opposition which portrays that UMNO is in cahoots with corrupt govenment servants etc.

Actually, the corruption among civil servants or government officers is bigger than among politicians.

UMNO aware about this and proved when I recently raised this issue in a talk to participates of Latihan Penceramah UMNO Bahagian Telok Kemang at Felda Residence Hot Springs, Sungkai, Perak. They thunderously applauded.

However, I was asked by one of the participates whether this kind of revealation by a UMNO member will give a negative implication to government.

My answer is no, instead it will give a positive feedback form people that shows that UMNO is in frontline to correct the imbalance in government’s image. Politicians cannot continue to accept this kind of negative thought due to civil servants attitude.

With UMNO giving cold shoulders over weak government servants, corrupt etc, it gives impression that UMNO is in alliance with corrupt civil servants and irresponsible to people.

Not all civil or government servants are irresponsible or corrupt but because of one or two bad apples, it involves all. Worse still, there are some civil or government servants smear politicians because of their prejudice attitude without concrete evidence.

Time has come for government servants to realise that they are being watched by UMNO branches and those UMNO member who has interest in projects, do not sacrifice peoples interest because of your interest and sweep the dirt under the carpet.

Also, the Village Development Committee (Jawatankuasa Kemajuan Kampung) needs to reorientize to avoid giving bad impressions to government due to their own irresponsible attitude or no idea of their own job functions.

From my experience as Member of Parliment in Merbok and as a Minister, I’ve heard peoples’ grouses through my unannounced visits about unfunctional Village Development Committee (Jawatankuasa Kemajuan Kampung) members.

These members didn’t know the problems exist in their area, didn’t know how many are there drug addicts, backwardness children, patients or disabled who are left unattended etc. This spoils government’s intention in appointing them as their eyes and ears.

MPs shouldn’t have full trust on their VDC member even if they are UMNO member but they should make unannounced visit to their area and meet the people to get the real picture about the VDC weaknesses.

Some UMNO minister talks about the need of leader with wow facts, to know what peoples hope but do the realise what are the things that are unwanted and hated by people.

The image of ministers and their wives have to change. They must be seen as normal people in their visits. They should’t symbolize themselves with their dressing and lifestyle away form people. Their wives, especially, shouldn’t be seen as model or queen of fashion with their expensive clothings.

There are many ministers or former ministers wives that can be taken as good example in approaching people, that synbolises their life in no different with people.

If the image between elite and people are getting wider, then it gives bad signs to UMNO in facing new generation with feudalism and elite thinking. In this aspect, form feminine angle, wife of Allahyarham Tun Abdul Razak, wife of former Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah nad wife of Professor Diraja Ungku Aziz, Allhyarham Azah Aziz can be made as an example.

LESSONS FROM ANCIENT COMEDIES There is wisdom in these seemingly silly tales Picture this. A man mistakenly gives his newborn baby a bath in boiling hot water. The child's face, grimaced and distorted, reflects her agony. In the throes of death, she fails her hands about and dies in her father's arms. This is one of the most gruesome scenes in the popular Malay folk literature series of Pak Pandir.Pak Pandir, in absurd conclusion, looks at the baby's face and thinks she is laughing with glee. Mak Andeh comes home, to find her only daughter scalded to death. How this could be considered comedy is probably beyond the comprehension of the modern audiences of today. And yet, perhaps, this is the genius of the ancient comedies in delivering the simplest of messages. That sheer stupidity can cause great grief and untold personal loss. The unthinkable makes you think. Why such tales? Perhaps comedies are prevalent in all old fables as a means to share wisdom
Henry Gurney's Final Fight Gurney's funeral procession through the streets of Kuala Lumpur on Oct 8, 1951. The place is infested with mosquitoes and one glides to a halt on Siew Mah's sweat-soaked right forearm. Yet, the guerrilla commander of Pahang's 11th Regiment and close confidante of Chin Peng remains motionless at his ambush station. His eyes and mind are transfixed on the section of narrow twisting road further in front that forms an almost perfect S-shaped bend. Siew Mah moves his head slowly to check on the positions of the rest of his 38-member platoon. The movement startles the mosquito and it quickly flies away without having the chance to draw blood. From the corner of his eyes, the commander traces the tracks connected to his three Bren-gun firing positions. Satisfied, he turns to check the crucial withdrawal route where he and his men will dissolve back into the jungle once the act had been committed. The date is
